Yes, I am talking about cube shelves–everybody’s got’em! A few years back I was so excited when I went to Ikea and bought the huge Expedit bookshelf in white–I loved it! But alas, as all things Ikea go, everyone else loved them too. Now I am just plain old sick of seeing them. Right before we moved into our new apt, I found some smaller ClosetMaid cubes and was so excited to mix it up a bit and still have a place for all of Matt’s records. Well the impatient gal that I am, I made one small clerical error before asking the hubs to assemble them. Uhhh…yes, check the measurements!!! We were about 3/4″ shy of the 12″ records fitting. In all honesty, that is what I get for acting out of impulse (they were on SALE!!!!) So now, in addition to our Sofa Saga, we also need shelves. Nice, tall, beautiful shelves that will allow us to have closet space again. (Now, the hubs tells me that his collection is just a junior collection in comparison to some of his friends, but I can’t even imagine. He can almost fill an entire room with all of his media and music!)
As I was saying–nice, tall, beautiful shelves. I have been looking everywhere and trying to my darndest to purchase real wood shelving or quality metal. It boggles my mind how much crap is out there! Everything is laminate covered particle board or weird plastic-like material. I actually had been thinking about trying to get Matt to build something, but we would have to do it back in Ohio and then we would have no way to get them here. Matt’s dad built us a replica of this console from CB2 and I think it cost $85 in supplies. I love it and it fits our gi-normous TV perfectly.

So after all the searching, I found a Chicago sculptor who builds custom shelving units with fun, modern lines and shapes. He builds everything in pine which is not ideal because it is so soft, but a million times better than pressed board. Oh and did I mention that he is affordable? Yup, $155 per shelving unit–each with 5 tiers, high enough to fit records! Hip, Hip, Hooray. But for the time being I have decided to keep his details and wherabouts concealed. A-because I need to verify the quality of sculptor man’s work and b-I don’t want everyone jocking my super cool style, yo! As a consolation prize I found this hip little honeycomb shelving unit on Etsy. It is not in my budget, but lovely regardless and some nice eye candy to gaze upon. Enjoy!
